Our waste system needs structural changes

Did you know that globally, 68% of municipal solid waste is still dumped or landfilled?

And that with 70% of that waste being organic material, this produces methane as it decomposes? Did you know that methane is a greenhouse gas 80x more potent than CO₂ over a 20-year period?

According to the UN Environment Programme’s 2024 Global Waste Management Outlook, inefficient waste management is one of the biggest climate threats we’re not talking about. It’s not just open dumps in developing countries—sanitary landfills in the US and Europe still leak massive amounts of methane into the atmosphere.

At Hydryx, we believe landfills should be part of the climate solution, not just the problem. By automating landfill gas extraction, we capture more methane, convert it into renewable energy, and cut emissions at the source.

We’re on a mission to change the way landfills are managed—because every ton of waste that decomposes without intervention is a missed opportunity to reduce emissions.

It’s time to rethink landfills. Let’s turn waste into a resource, not just a liability.
