The Global Methane Status report, and what we are looking out for at COP31

COP31 starts on 9 November in Antalya. The first theme on its Action Agenda is Zero Waste, and the first priority under it is reducing methane emissions from waste. 🌍

Here is what we are on the lookout for.

Last November, UNEP and CCAC published the Global Methane Status Report, a progress check on the Global Methane Pledge launched at COP26. For waste, the current state is mixed.

  • 📈 Currently, methane emissions from the waste sector are still projected to reach 81 million tonnes a year by 2030.
  • ✅ But the report says a big cut is possible. Fully deploying proven waste measures could cut 13 million tonnes of methane a year by 2030.
  • 💰 This would cost about US$18 billion a year, and bring about US$27 billion a year in electricity and gas savings: a net saving of roughly US$9 billion. This makes waste the world’s cheapest methane source.

We will be following COP31 for two things. Both the Action Agenda and the report call for MRV systems (measurement, reporting and verification). And although landfills aren’t named in the Action Agenda priorities, we will see whether they come up in the room, and how. Zero Waste day is 11 November, the same day the Leaders Summit begins.

At Hydryx, we know that measurement matters most when it leads to optimized landfill gas capture. That’s how our system works: sensors monitor each gas well and actuators tune it every 15 minutes, so more gas is captured and put to use. The extra landfill gas ensures that the system pays for itself.
