Hydryx receives funding from Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland

Hydryx B.V., een startup gevestigd in Amsterdam, heeft een converteerbare lening van €350.000 ontvangen van het Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland.

Hydryx is developing a landfill gas management system to reduce methane emissions from landfills. The company was founded in 2023 by Anthonie Jacobson and Joren Tangelder.

Landfills worldwide are significant contributors to the climate crisis. About 30% of global warming is caused by methane, and 20% of that comes from landfills. This is due to the anaerobic digestion of waste, which generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas 80 times as potent as CO2. Hydryx is developing a system that captures this methane and utilizes it to generate renewable electricity.

Landfills in Europe are typically equipped with gas extraction systems that draw methane out so it can be used in generators to produce green electricity. However, the efficiency of these systems is low, in part because there is little insight into methane fluctuations and the optimal timing for extraction. Currently, this process is managed manually, leading to inefficiencies. Hydryx automates this process, significantly increasing extraction efficiency. By extracting more methane, less is released into the atmosphere, and more renewable energy can be produced.

The funding from the Innovation Fund will be used to carry out demonstration projects at three landfill sites. These proof-of-concept projects will be instrumental in attracting new customers and initiating international expansion. The product will also be improved, with more robust sensors and enhanced algorithms.

Anthonie Jacobson, Co-Founder of Hydryx:"We see landfills as an overlooked part of the climate problem. Our mission is to cut these emissions as quickly as possible, and it's fantastic that the Innovation Fund North Holland is helping accelerate our approach with this funding."

Ludolf Stavenga, Fund Manager at Innovation Fund North Holland:"Hydryx offers a smart combination of hardware and software to address a highly relevant market problem. With support from INH, Hydryx can demonstrate that this solution works on a larger scale."

About Hydryx

Hydryx’s mission is to capture emissions from landfills and repurpose them to accelerate the energy transition. By making green gas from landfills accessible, the electricity grid can become more sustainable. Hydryx was founded in 2023 by Anthonie Jacobson and Joren Tangelder.

About the Innovation Fund North Holland

The Innovation Fund North Holland is an initiative of the Province of North Holland, the University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Amsterdam UMC, and Sanquin. The fund supports entrepreneurs in North Holland in financing innovations during the proof-of-concept phase by providing convertible loans. The Innovation Fund manages two funds: one for innovative startups (supported by the RVO) and one for academic startups (supported by EFRO). www.innovatiefondsnoordholland.nl
